Carbon Footprint of Food

So, what's the best way to reduce your diet's carbon footprint? We've put together a list of almost 2000 food ingredients from eight research projects to help you out.

The data tells a clear story: The main thing to remember is to avoid red meat. Lamb has more than 30 kg CO₂e per kg, and beef is over 20. It's clear that switching up the types of meat you use is helpful: Swapping beef for chicken is already a 4.5x gap. And even better, you can replace meat with vegetables, fruits and grains: There's a 23.7x gap between beef and veg - from over 21 CO₂e per kilogram down to 0.9. This is the biggest thing we can do to reduce the environmental impact of what we eat.

Median footprint by food category

Select a category to see the foods inside it. (kg CO₂e / kg)

How to read these numbers

Every figure shows the kilos of CO2 equivalent per kilo of product. The eight sources listed at the bottom of this page don't all measure the same thing: some stop at the farm gate, others follow a food to the shop shelf or the plate, and some include packaging. That's why the same food can appear several times with different numbers. We keep every figure and name its source rather than averaging them into one misleading value.
